The Complete Guide to the Cost of Returns

Returns cost more than the refund suggests. Even when the money goes back to the customer, you've usually paid shipping twice, spent time inspecting and restocking, and sometimes lost the product entirely. This guide shows how to put a number on those costs and spread them across every order so they show up in your pricing and ad targets.
The calculation
Cost per return = return shipping + inspection and restocking + original shipping lost + (share of returns you can't resell × product cost). Monthly cost = orders × return rate × cost per return.
Example: 1,000 orders a month at an 8% return rate
| Item | Value |
|---|---|
| Returns per month | 80 |
| Cost per return ($7 + $3 + $5 + 25% × $20) | $20.00 |
| Cost of returns per month | $1,600 |
| Spread over every order | $1.60 |
| Share of revenue ($60 average order) | 2.67% |
Keeping returns under control
Track reasons
Record why each item came back. A cluster of 'too small' returns on one product is fixable.
Grade returned stock
Selling lightly used items as open-box recovers part of the product cost instead of writing it off.
Price it in
Categories with high return rates need higher margins. Ignoring returns overstates profit on every order.
Frequently asked questions
What does a return cost a seller?
Typically the return shipping label, the original outbound shipping you can't recover, labor to inspect and restock, and the product cost for items that can't be resold. Refunds cancel the sale itself, so they aren't counted as an extra cost here.
What is a normal e-commerce return rate?
It varies widely by category: low single digits for many consumables and electronics accessories, and 20%–30% or more for clothing and footwear, where fit drives returns.
How do I include returns in my product pricing?
Use the 'cost spread over every order' figure. Add it to your per-order costs in the profit, selling price, and break-even ROAS calculators so every sale carries its share of returns.
How can I reduce returns?
Better size guides, accurate photos and descriptions, and showing customer reviews about fit or quality reduce avoidable returns. Some sellers also offer exchanges or store credit instead of refunds.
