How it's calculated

Average cost = total invested ÷ total coins, where each purchase adds amount ÷ price coins. Your average cost is also your break-even price.

The Complete Guide to Dollar-Cost Averaging (DCA)

By Arshi Khan, Founder of Just4Marketing · Last reviewed October 2026

Dollar-cost averaging means investing a fixed amount at regular intervals instead of all at once. Your average cost per coin ends up between the highest and lowest prices you paid — and usually below the simple average of those prices. This guide shows how to calculate it and what it does and doesn't protect you from.

Calculating your average cost

Average cost = total invested ÷ total coins. Each purchase adds amount ÷ price coins. Your break-even price is your average cost: if the market price is above it, your whole position is in profit.

2$500$50,0000.010000

Making DCA work

  • Automate it

A recurring buy on a fixed schedule removes the temptation to time the market.

  • Keep the amount steady

DCA's averaging effect comes from spending the same amount each time, not from buying the same number of coins.

  • It doesn't prevent losses

If the price keeps falling, every purchase loses money. DCA spreads out timing risk; it doesn't remove market risk.

Frequently asked questions

How is the DCA average price calculated?

Divide the total dollars you invested by the total coins you received. Because a fixed dollar amount buys more coins when the price is low, your average cost is weighted toward the cheaper purchases.

Why is my average cost lower than the average price?

Buying $500 at $60,000, $50,000, and $40,000 gives an average cost of $48,648.65, not $50,000. The $500 at $40,000 bought the most coins, pulling the average down. This is the main mathematical benefit of investing equal dollar amounts.

Is DCA better than investing a lump sum?

Not always. Historically, in markets that rise over time, investing a lump sum earlier has often done better on average. DCA reduces the risk of putting everything in at a peak and makes the decision easier to stick with.

Should I include fees?

For accuracy, enter each purchase amount after fees — the dollars that actually bought coins. Recurring buys on some apps have higher fees than standard trades.
