How it's calculated

This uses the U.S. Navy method, which estimates body fat from circumference measurements (neck, waist, and hip for women) relative to height using a logarithmic formula. It's a reasonable estimate, not a substitute for clinical body composition testing.

The Complete Guide to Body Fat Percentage

Body fat percentage tells you how much of your body mass is fat versus lean tissue — a more direct measure of body composition than weight or BMI alone. This guide explains the U.S. Navy circumference method used by this calculator, what a healthy range looks like, and where tape-measure estimates fall short.

What is the U.S. Navy method and why does it matter?

The U.S. Navy circumference method estimates body fat percentage using just a tape measure — height, neck, waist, and (for women) hip circumference — plugged into a logarithmic formula. It was developed as a fast, no-equipment alternative to skinfold calipers or underwater weighing, and the U.S. military has used it for decades as part of body composition standards.

For men, the formula is 495 ÷ (1.0324 − 0.19077 × log₁₀(waist − neck) + 0.15456 × log₁₀(height)) − 450. For women, it's 495 ÷ (1.29579 − 0.35004 × log₁₀(waist + hip − neck) + 0.221 × log₁₀(height)) − 450, with all measurements in the same unit.

Limitations to keep in mind

  • Measurement technique matters a lot

A waist measurement taken an inch too high or too tight can shift the result noticeably. Measure at the same spot, same time of day, for consistent tracking over time.

  • It's an estimate, not a lab measurement

Methods like DEXA scans or hydrostatic weighing are far more precise. Circumference methods are useful for tracking trends, not for exact clinical decisions.

  • Fat distribution varies by individual

Two people with identical waist and neck measurements can have different actual body fat if their fat is distributed differently — the formula is a population average.

  • Track trends, not single readings

Body fat naturally fluctuates with hydration and food intake. A single measurement matters less than the direction it moves over several weeks.

Frequently asked questions

How accurate is the U.S. Navy method?

It's generally accurate within about 3–4% of body fat compared to more precise methods like DEXA scans, which makes it a solid free estimate — but not a clinical-grade measurement.

Why does the calculator ask for hip measurement for women but not men?

The Navy formula uses different equations by sex. The male formula only needs waist and neck circumference; the female formula adds hip circumference because fat distribution patterns differ between men and women.

What's a healthy body fat percentage?

It depends on your goals and sex — see the category table below. 'Fitness' and 'Average' ranges are healthy for most people; 'Athletic' ranges are common among trained athletes, and going below the 'Essential fat' minimum is not recommended for either sex.

Is body fat percentage more useful than BMI?

For understanding body composition specifically, yes — it distinguishes fat from muscle, which BMI can't. But it requires careful, consistent measurement technique to stay accurate, so both tools are useful together rather than as replacements for each other.
